Burlington, Mass., March 12, 2025 — Haley & Aldrich client HNTB has won two 2025 American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Virgina awards — including the highest honor given by the organization — for its work on a highway expansion near Fredericksburg. Haley & Aldrich provided geotechnical engineering services for the award-winning project.
HNTB designed the expansion of the Interstate 95 Express Lanes, a public-private partnership that called for building approximately 10 miles of new highway in challenging Potomac Formation soil conditions. The firm received the Pinnacle Award, which recognizes the top overall project in the state, and a Grand Award, which honors the five top projects. ACEC Virginia praised Haley & Aldrich’s geotechnical contributions at the Feb. 6 awards ceremony, which Haley & Aldrich consultant Derrick Shelton attended alongside representatives from HNTB.
Shelton led the Haley & Aldrich project team, which brought previous experience with the local geology to overcome the technical challenges of the extension and delivered innovative geotechnical solutions on a tight timeline. The new lanes opened in 2023, easing travel for drivers and supporting Virginia’s infrastructure investments.
“I’m so proud to see the project team’s work recognized with these statewide awards,” said Shelton, who has worked in and around Virginia for more than two decades. “A large public-private partnership like this requires strong collaboration with stakeholders in addition to technical expertise, and it’s an honor to have worked with so many excellent partners for the good of Virginia’s commuters.”
