Haley & Aldrich receives engineering awards for the Keʻanae Road safety improvements project

Burlington, Mass., May 27, 2021—Hart Crowser, a division of Haley & Aldrich, announced today that the firm won two awards for its Keʻanae Road safety improvements project – the 2021 Project of the Year from the Hawaii Society of Professional Engineers (HSPE) Maui Chapter and an Honor Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies Hawaii (ACECH).

Hart Crowser was the geotechnical engineer of record for the project, working under the project’s prime civil engineer, Fukumoto Engineering of Wailuku, for the County of Maui Department of Public Works. The team’s efforts reduced the rockfall and road hazard risk on Keʻanae Road in Maui, Hawaii, providing peace of mind for residents who rely on the road for access to their homes and tourists who contribute to the local economy.

“Hart Crowser is honored to be recognized by HSPE and ACECH for our work to improve resident and tourist safety on Keʻanae Peninsula,” said Janice Marsters, Managing Principal of Hart Crowser’s Maui office. “Active collaboration and coordination with Keʻanae residents resulted in a project inspired and supported by the community, while meeting the County’s objectives of a cost-effective solution that would improve safety.”

Keʻanae Road is a mile-long road off Hana Highway that is the only access point to the historic Keʻanae Peninsula. A 100-foot-high slope along an 800-foot roadway section had a history of rockfall incidents, endangering residents and tourists alike. The project required significant community outreach and coordination since construction would require road closures. Our rockfall mitigation efforts included a combination of rock scaling, netting, rock fencing, and concrete barriers to address different risks along the roadway. The design safeguarded natural and cultural resources, protected nearby aquatic resources, and promoted sustainability through the materials selected.
