Hydrogeologist Nadia Glucksberg, risk-assessment expert Jay Peters, and environmental, sustainability, and governance (ESG) expert Dawn Santoianni recently published the article “SMRs meet ESG: Water conservation benefits of small and advanced reactors” in NuclearNewswire.

In this article, they discuss how small modular reactors (SMRs) and other advanced nuclear technologies can aid the nuclear industry’s efforts to meet ESG goals.

These technologies offer the scalable capability to meet fluctuating electrical demand, they write, making them promising providers of flexible, zero-carbon energy. They also require a smaller footprint for construction (compared with conventional nuclear power), can reduce utility companies’ water use and effluent discharge, and be sited at retiring coal or nuclear power plants to take advantage of existing infrastructure and equipment.
